What is Orkut: Social Networking?
A social network is a service that allows the interaction between people based on any unifying factors they have amongst them. Social networks can be offline or online and are of many kinds but in this age it is hard to think of one that is not based on the Internet. That is quite clear considering what is Orkut and many of its competitors like Facebook and Twitter. Admittedly, Orkut is not as popular as others like Facebook, MySpace and Google’s own Google Plus but if you think Orkut is insignificant then you have another thing coming. In parts of South America, like Brazil, Orkut is a household name for social networking. It is also quite popular in India. People in these areas are less aware of Facebook and other world-over popular social networks.
What is Orkut: The Coming To Be
What is Orkut today was began by a Turkish engineer with a knack for social networking. His name is Orkut Büyükkökten. The eponymous engineer’s inventions are not only limited to Orkut. He also created Club Nexus, the world’s first pure college social networking platform and inCircle, an alumni social network. He later joined Google where he actualized his dreams of creating a platform through which all users of the Internet from all over the world could collaborate. This service was named ‘Orkut’ after him. Google launched Orkut in January 2004 as independent product within its portfolio. Initially, Google run Orkut from California but later decided to re-launch it under the Brazilian Google faction, Google Brazil. This was to tap into the unutilized Brazilian subscriber base and to avoid legal complications in the United States. Towards the end of 2011, Orkut had over 66 million subscribers worldwide and according to Alexa Traffic, was the 125th most visited site in the world.
So, How Does Orkut Work?
You can use your Google ID to enroll in Orkut for free. Orkut allows people to strengthen relationships through more enhanced socialization. It also allows one to meet and make new friends. Well… The basic functions of any social networking service! You can use Google Video and Youtube to share videos on Orkut. There is also the equivalent of the Facebook Like button that you can use to express awareness on a topic to other users. Also, GTalk users can use a gateway connection to chat directly with friends on Orkut.
What is Orkut Polling?
What you might not find on other social networking sites is the polling feature on Orkut. A user can post a debatable topic and then use the feature to collect votes for and against. This is invaluable when you want to conduct opinion polls to help in research. Also, unlike most of the other social networking sites whose theme colours are copyrighted and fixed, Orkut users in Brazil, India and Pakistan can change the appearance of their Orkut accounts. A wide variety of colourful themes is available to choose from. Additionally, Orkut allows users to evaluate friends using parameters like cool, trustworthy and sexy. A score of 1 to 3 can be assigned to each of the parameters. When the average of these three is calculated, the result is given as a percentage showing how valuable one friend is to the other.
The Orkut crush list is also another intuitive feature. When a user adds another on their crush list and the friend also adds him or her back, then they are both notified. This scores Orkut some points as a dating tool. Orkut is currently available in over 45 languages including traditional Chinese and Marathi.

What Are The Orkut Controversies?
Every great invention is at first hampered by problems before they are finally iron it out. Orkut’s are some of the gravest in the history of social networks and might have led to loss of subscriber base to Facebook in countries like Estonia where it was previously popular. The first serious issue was use of automated software to create Orkut profiles. These profiles were created using readily available tools like Floodtudo and used to scam users, flood the service and market illegal products.
Simple HTML tweaking and use of tiny profile picture thumbnails also allowed dishonorable users to create invisible profiles. These users used the invisible profiles to spread hate messages and create communities and topics with unsociable themes. These hate themes included black discrimination and Nazism.
Most of the problems surrounding Orkut have however been fixed through re-coding and introduction of security features such as captchas. Bots can no longer automatically create accounts and users have been required to include sizeable profile pictures to curb ‘invisible profiles’.
