What Is Google Truly?

What is Google?
Not many people know what Google Inc. is really about or of its beginnings and how it came to be what it is today. There are popular euphemisms, however, that talk of Google being the company that will colonize the Internet and finally the whole world owing to its exploits in as far internet services are concerned. Join us as we seek to unravel, in totality, what Google is all about. First off, how did it come to be?

The History of Google
The multinational corporation that is Google today was founded by two Stanford University students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin and was called “Backrub”. Google was actually the subject of their research paper for the award of PhDs from the same university. The two are often dubbed the ‘Google Guys’. ‘Google’ was coined after some playing with the word googol which means a figure with one hundred zeros. Apparently, it was used to show Google would provide lots of information to the world. For a while, Google ran off the university website with the URL google.stanford.edu. The google.com domain was later registered with a website featuring a very simple interface reminiscent of lack of advanced HTML knowledge in design. Unknown to Page and Brin, this simplicity would be the main strength of their search engine. With a mission set to reorganize all information on the Internet and make it easy to access for everyone, Google’s flagship venture was the world’s favourite search engine, Google Search. Google was registered in 1998 and it hit the stock exchange in 2004 as GOOG on NASDAQ. It moved to Mountain View, California, where it is headquartered to date in 2006. The popularity of Google Search was undeniably instrumental to the coming to be of one of the world’s most valuable companies. Google Search was the first search engine to recognize the importance of backlinks in determining the relevance of a website or webpage. Contributors who had faith in the venture turned up. Chief among them is Andy Bechtolsheim of Sun Mirosystems who gave a $100,000 USD check in 1998. Google’s growth was also greatly spurred by a string of acquisitions, partnerships and product rollouts. A chief example of a great acquisition was that of Youtube in October 2006.

What is Google PageRank?

What Is Google’s PageRank mechanism brought new dimensions to the methods that were used by search engines to determine the relevance of a website to keywords. Rather than base it simply on densities of keywords (which led to dubious marketers overstuffing site content, or keyword stuffing), Google devised a system to calculate rank according to how a website linked to other websites in the same niche. If a website received a link from another related one that ranked higher, it meant the subject website would improve in rank. This technology has been since patented by Google but it is unclear if the search giant allows other search engines to use it under license or for free. PageRank gave birth to the science of SEO (Search Engine Optimization); the aggregate of all activities carried out by an Internet Marketer to improve how well a website ranks in the SERP of a search engine as it pertains to a keyword, and more so on Google, the world’s premier search engine.

What is Google’s Gmail?
Gmail is one of the world’s favorite web-based email services. After its launch in April 2004, Gmail was an invite-only service in beta stage. When it became available to the public in 2007 it was still not complete and it was not until July 2009 that the ‘beta’ tag was taken off of it. Gmail is free to everyone with a Google ID and allows access to email messages through IMAP, POP3 and a secure web connection (https). Even at the time of its launch, it had completely outdone competitors like MSN’s Hotmail with its 1 GB storage space allocation per user. Webmail services of the time only afforded users under 5 MB of storage. Revenue is garnered from Gmail through advertisements which in recent times are synced with the subjects and contents of email messages.

What is Google AdWords?

Google AdWords is how Google rakes in most of its revenue, and therefore, so as to understand the magnitude of the program, it is noteworthy that it earned Google over 90% of the 28 Billion USD advertising revenue reported in 2010. AdWords runs user advertisements in a subtle way on the search engine results page for a particular keyword. The advertisements are limited so as not to crowd the results page or to cause results to load slowly. The program offers advertisements in per-click, per-thousand and site targeted modes, all of which have different subscription plans. Adwords is a good option to get websites seen for marketers unable to master the guile of SEO.

What is Google Translate?

Google Translate is a free web based translation service that allows users to translate text between over 35 languages. Browser extensions are available to enable users to make the best use of the translation service instead of having to load translate.google.com. The free API to the service was however discontinued on 1st December 2011 in favor of a paid version owing to what Google described as ‘gross misuse’ of the service. It spurred criticisms from a select group of website owners who had implemented the API in their sites.

Google has taken the last 10 years of systems software research out of university labs, and built their own proprietary, production quality system. What is this platform that Google is building? It’s a distributed computing platform that can manage web-scale datasets on 100,000 node server clusters. It includes a petabyte, distributed, fault tolerant filesystem, distributed RPC code, probably network shared memory and process migration. And a datacenter management system which lets a handful of ops engineers effectively run 100,000 servers. Any of these projects could be the sole focus of a startup. While competitors are targeting the individual applications Google has deployed, Google is building a massive, general purpose computing platform for web-scale programming.

Corporate Environment:
Google has a reputation for a casual atmosphere. As one of the few successful dot.com startups, Google still retains many perks of that era, including free lunch and laundry for employees and parking lot roller hockey games. Google employees are allowed to spend twenty percent of their time on projects of their choosing.

Controversial Behavior:
Google, in order to maintain a worldwide presence, has sometimes had to pull or filter keywords and websites for web searches originating in some countries, such as China, Germany, France, or even the United States. This has lead to charges of corporate censorship, but Google maintains that they filtered results only to comply with the law.
